The fiddles of NAFCo take you on an extraordinary musical journey from Sweden, south to Galicia in Spain, and across the Atlantic Ocean to Mexico.
Osiris Ramsés Caballero León originally from Poza Rica, Veracruz, is an outstanding exponent of Mexican traditional music from the Huasteca region. He studied the fiddle leading to a degree at UAT School of Music in Arizona. He has been a member of several legendary groups, including Los Cantores de Valles trio, Los Utrera, and the Guardians of the Huasteca in Mexico City.
Begoña Riobó is considered to be Galicia’s foremost violinist. She has played with the bands of Carlos Núñez, Susana Seivane and Sondeseu, among others. She is joined by multi-instrumentalist Xosé Liz who plays bouzouki, mandolin, guitar and flute. Among his talents are putting music to documentaries and accompanying international artists.
Our Swedish quartet are no strangers to NAFCo, having joined us in Aberdeen on three previous occasions. Together they uphold the traditions of the Bohuslän region of West Sweden. Both Göran Premberg (fiddle) and Pernilla Stendahl (nyckelharpa or keyed fiddle) have received Sweden’s highest honour, Riksspelmän, as outstanding tradition bearers and teachers. They are joined by spellbinding dancers, Mats Nilsson and Ingegerd Sigfridsson.
The NAFCo Blue Lamp Soirées showcase of some of NAFCo’s finest musicians in one of Aberdeen’s legendary traditional, folk and acoustic music venues. Cabaret-style seating and candles set the ambience for an intimate evening of fabulous performances and musical exploration.
